Irina Rectenwald, M.S., NCC, LAPC (PA)
Founder

Irina Rectenwald, M.S., NCC, LAPC (PA)

I am a Licensed Associate Professional Counselor, National Certified Counselor, and Level 2 Natural Lifemanship–certified equine specialist. As founder of Songbird Ranch Wellness Center, I guide participants in building safety, connection, and authentic relational growth through experiential, nature-based, and equine-assisted practices grounded in neuroscience, attachment principles, and trauma-informed care.

With a background in Child Life, therapeutic activities, and environmental design, I bring creativity, insight, and embodied presence to all experiences. I am passionate about relationships, intergenerational healing, and the transformative power of animals and the outdoors.

Living on a ranch with my husband, horses, dogs, cats, and a lively flock of feathered companions, I draw inspiration from the rhythms of nature, believing that meaningful growth unfolds through connection—with self, others, and the world around us.

Alexa Miller
Equine Care Manager

Alexa Miller

I am the Ranch and Equine Care Manager at Songbird Ranch Wellness Center, where I oversee the daily care of the horses and stewardship of the property to ensure both are maintained to the highest professional standard. With years of hands-on experience in professional equine environments across the East Coast, I bring a strong foundation in horse management, welfare, and facility operations. My priority is to support the physical and emotional well-being of our horses so they can live as naturally and comfortably as possible. Their health and dignity are central to the healing work that takes place here.

I share this space with my retired equine partner, a former athlete who has traded the intensity of competition for the well-earned art of pasture living. After years of performance, he has happily embraced his new herd and rhythm here at the ranch. These days, he can often be found supervising operations from his favorite sunny spot—occasionally offering an opinion, always accepting scratches, and reminding us that retirement, when done right, looks a lot like belonging.

Songbird Ranch is a place of connection—where people learn from the land, from the horses, and from the relationships formed in this space. I am grateful to be part of this meaningful work each day.

Equine Partners & Staff

Darlin
Head of the herd

Darlin

Darlin carries herself with the confident presence of a seasoned leader with a soft heart. She brings maturity, patience, and—on occasion—a gentle insistence on order when things need tidying up. She keeps a watchful eye on everyone, making sure the herd is safe, grounded, and cared for… whether they asked for guidance or not.

Rocky
Senior gentleman

Rocky

Rocky has the heart of a steadfast guardian and takes his self-appointed job of “protector” very seriously. If a herd mate is anxious or unsettled, Rocky is usually the first to offer a calm, regulating presence. He may be older, but he’s still the wise, stoic rock the others lean into.

Melman
Retired working horse

Melman

Melman has a personality far larger than his body; he is joyfully learning the art of freedom, choice, and mutually respectful relationships. His curiosity is always dialed to maximum, and his sense of play knows absolutely no limits. If something is new, interesting, or even mildly suspicious, Melman will investigate it first.

Fanny May
Retired working horse

Fanny May

Fanny May is a mare with a story-rich soul—one that reveals itself when you slow down long enough to listen. She can be both tender and fiery, sometimes within the same minute. Passionate about food, she possesses an extraordinary ability to locate the apple in your pocket from across the pasture.

Gemini (Gem)
Chief Rodent Management Officer

Gemini (Gem)

Gemini (Gem) serves as the ranch’s Chief Rodent Management Officer, helping keep barns and feed areas safe while contributing to the calm, grounded atmosphere of the ranch. Whether supervising chores or offering a quiet, reassuring presence, Gem reminds us that healing often comes from steady, everyday connections with animals.

Your Journey — A Step-by-Step Process

A structured yet personalized process to ensure intentional, safe support.

1. Initial Inquiry

We begin with a brief phone conversation to learn more about you, your goals, and what you’re hoping to experience. Together, we’ll explore what approach feels like the best place to start.

2. Getting Started

Our first meeting is an opportunity to slow down, connect, and begin building safety and trust. We explore your goals and experiences at a pace that feels grounded and supportive. For younger participants, parents or caregivers are included to strengthen connection and create a shared foundation for growth.

3. Designing Your Experience

Together, we clarify goals and create a personalized path that supports connection, regulation, and growth. Guided by Natural Lifemanship principles, experiences may include equine-assisted sessions, nature-based activities, or a thoughtfully blended approach.

4. Experiential & Relational Work

Sessions unfold at each participant’s pace, emphasizing connection, attunement, and nervous system awareness. Experiences may include sensory-rich, nature-based, and equine-assisted activities that support regulation and relational growth. Our equine partners engage only when calm and willing, honoring their well-being and ensuring safe, respectful interactions for all.

5. Ongoing Review & Growth

We pause regularly to reflect on growth, ensuring each experience continues to align with your goals and evolving needs. As connection deepens and new insights emerge, we adjust the path together in a way that feels supportive and intentional.

6. Celebrating Growth & Next Steps

When goals have been reached or the experience feels complete, we take time to reflect on growth and celebrate progress. Together, we identify supportive next steps and ways to continue building connection, resilience, and well-being beyond your time at the ranch.
